Down the Santa Fe Trail and into Mexico: Diary of Susan Shelby Magoffin 1846-1847
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (January, 1963)
Average review score:

Primary Source tale of a honeymoon on the Santa Fe TrailMagoffin was a name familiar to the Mexicans who had trading relations with Susan's husband for years before he married her and took her with him from the states on an expedition to Chihuahua, Mexico. She kept a diary from which she drew her information for the only book I know written by a woman, young and pregnant, whose fate it was to die in her 26th year, at home. Accounts from her perspective at such a crucial time in relations between the United States and Mexico, in a venacular peculiarly her own, make her work one of considerable importance to the serious student of the time. Revealing also are individual encounters with men, some from her own country, and her opinion of Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny, commander of the U.S. Army of the West stationed in Sante Fe. Susan was a young lady of class the exercise of which makes the reader proud, and whose elegance charmed all who came to know her.

Excellent BookThis book has information on every movie, song, and the days of Elvis' life. It's like DAY BY DAY by Peter Guralnick (spelling?) but not as much $. Awesome color photos and a really nice cover make this book something to show off. 5 Stars!

The Elvis Encyclopedia: The Complete and Definitive Reference Book on the King of Rock & Roll
Published in Paperback by Virgin Books (16 July, 1998)
Average review score:

indispensable for elvis fansIf you want to know everything about Elvis, then this is the book you need. It contains everything about his personal life, his music, his movies, his friends and family, his likes and dislikes and more.
It was compiled by his stepbrother David E. Stanley and it has a foreward by Lamar Fike, Elvis' best friend.
It also has an Elvis trivia quiz for the real fantics.
If you need to know those more obscure songs he sang, you'll find it in here.
Since this book was first published in '94, I can only spot two original albums missing from the "his music" section.
"For the asking" and "Tomorrow is a long" time were supposed to have been released in the early and late sixties respectively, but instead they were dropped in favour of soundtrack albums. A lot of the songs from these two albums were used as fillers on soundtrack albums of the sixties.
Now these two long lost albums have recently been released by RCA. So the only reason they're not mentioned in this book, is because they weren't commercially available at the time this book was published.
It does mention at the beginning of the music section "this anthology contains only records released commercially - no bootlegs or unauthorised material".
They released this book with an alternative front cover in '98 (in the uk anyway), and I'm assuming it's exactly the same. I might buy that book because I've looked at my book so many times, especially in the music section, that some of the pages have come out. This is probably due to flicking back and forth so much.
Buy this book! You won't believe the amount of info in it.

Faith and RenewalThis book will move any reader into a spiritual journey of faith and renewal. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking their own spiritual walk with God, a strengthening of their existing faith, or the desire to begin a walk with God. You will be moved by the events that that place in the life of the Author, that caused her own questioning in her youth and as an adult. The renewal of her walk with God is inspiring and refreshing. Gold Seeker, Adventures of a Belgian Argonaut During the Gold Rush Years: Adventures of the Belgian Argonaut During the Gold Rush Years
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (December, 1998)

Great Great Grandpa did us proudExcellent review of my Great Great Grandfather's 20 years in America after leaving first Belgium and then Paris to seek his fortune with a company that upon arrival in Monterey, California was bankrupt. Being a self starter and not one to give up easily; he headed off to the gold fields on his own gathering other people as he went along. He gives an excellent account of the hardships and heartache suffered by not only himself but others who found themselves so far from home. It was either charge forward or give up and go to wherever it was you could afford to travel. It shows his compassion for his fellow man and also his ability to get along with the Indians and adapt to whatever the world threw at him You have to be proud of a guy like that. Eventually he married a cousin and brought her to the U.S. to live in Portland, Oregon but eventually they returned to Belgium where he whiled away his last years enjoying life and most probably thinking about the wonderful and exiting years of taking each day as it came; solving lifes problems and standing up for what he believed in; occasionally backing that up with his pistol and rifle. This is not a shoot em up story or anything of the sort; however, it does reflect what it was like to be on your own in a very difficult environment and time when only the strongest survived. Naturally, I am biased since the old fellow blazed a trail for the rest of us Perlot's----of which there are but a few.

The Greatest Fishing Stories Ever Told
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (November, 2000)
Average review score:

The Essence of FishingGreat book. Several short and long stories from real anglers with the ability to write about the intangibles of fishing. You can smell the salty air, see the tranquility of the streams, feel the excitement of the fury on the end of your line, just by reading this book. Some are little known authors, but they pack a heck of a punch. This is not a how to book! This is fishing! Lamar Underwood has done a masterful job of finding these jewels and making a enchanting read!

A Heart of Worship: Experience a Rebirth of Worship

OutstandingLamar spoke at my church a while back and he is just as dynamic in person as in the book. The eyes of my heart were open to God after reading this. All my life I had missed the point of worship: it wasn't until reading this book that I understood. I highly reccommend it.
